To meet international standard airport service standards in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), an airport is currently being built in the Kulonprogo area called New Yogyakarta International Airport (NYIA). The airport which is targeted to operate in 2019 is estimated to be able to accommodate around 15 million passengers annually. The construction of this new airport is expected to have a multiplier effect that can trigger an increase in the economy of both the business and tourism sectors in the Yogyakarta region.
To review the progress of the airport construction, the DPR RI Commission V team led by Sigit Sosiantomo conducted a Specific Work Visit (Kunker) to Yogyakarta on Monday (09/10). Sigit hopes that the government and airport managers can integrate the airport area into a logistical, industrial and tourism area in one integrated economic zone. "It is hoped that the existence of the New Yogyakarta International Airport airport will be able to improve the local economy and also absorb a lot of labor. To realize this, adequate infrastructure support is needed. That is our goal to invite the working partners of Commission V in the Specific Work Visit to review the construction of the airport, "he said.
The Director of Bridges of the Directorate General of Highways, Iwan Zarkasi, who also accompanied the council members agreed on the need for adequate road infrastructure to support the smooth flow of traffic to and from the airport. "Bina Marga will support road infrastructure because for a very large airport of course the traffic will also be more congested. Because the Southern Cross Roadway (JJLS) which is used as an airport access road is affected by airport construction, we are currently conducting a study of JJLS alternative routes, "he said.
Head of the National Center for Implementation of National Road VII, Achmad Herry Marzuki added that his party plans to improve roads in two sections to support the smooth flow of traffic. "To support limited operations in 2019, Bina Marga plans to upgrade the Sindutan-Congot Road along the 0.55km and Demen-Glagah Road along the 2.60km as a diversion from JJLS. The road segment is expected to be used when the airport starts operating in 2019 , "Said Herry.
In addition to relocating JJLS, the next step that will be carried out by the Directorate General of Highways as support for the construction of the NYIA airport is to build a Kretek Bridge on the access road to the airport and also conduct a toll road construction study to smoothen the flow of traffic to and from the airport.
