Jakarta - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) signed a Record of Discussions (RoD) on the Preparation of a Master Plan for Smart Transportation Systems and Pilot Systems for the Jakarta Metropolitan Area. The signing of the collaboration was carried out by the Director General of Highways of the Ministry of PUPR Sugiyartanto and the Country Director of KOICA Indonesia Hoejin Jeong, in Jakarta, 3/7/2019.
Development of the Smart Transportation System was also discussed by Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono during a meeting with South Korean Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MoLIT) Kim Hyun Mee, in Seoul, (6/28/2019).
This collaboration aims to improve the efficiency of road use, access and traffic safety by providing traffic information in real time to road users.
"This is a good start to overcome the problems of the transportation system in Greater Jakarta. With the existence of an intelligent transportation system, can regulate the transportation sector more effectively. The success of this collaboration also requires support from other relevant Ministries / Institutions including the Jabodetabek Transportation Management Agency (BPTJ) Ministry of Transportation and the Indonesian Police Traffic Corps, "said Director General of Highways Sugiyartanto.
The project will last for 5 years consisting of 3 years of implementation and 2 years of maintenance with a budget of 5.5 million USD. The scope of cooperation is the development of the Smart Transportation System Master Plan, the implementation of the pilot system carried out in the Jakarta-Cikampek corridor, the provision of legal guidelines and regulations for the Smart Transportation System and training to improve the capacity of human resources.
In his remarks, Hoejin Jeong explained that this collaboration could strengthen relations between the two countries after previously there was collaboration between KOICA and the Research and Development Agency (Balitbang) of the Ministry of PUPR which produced a prototype of the Integration Road Data Center Operation (IRODCO). The operating system can be further developed through this collaboration.
In recent years, Korea has developed methodologies and strategies to reduce traffic effectively. Almost all cities in Korea are recorded on video. More than 9 million surveillance cameras operate on the streets to the subway station. If an accident occurs, they automatically take pictures and post them on social media and news and provide citizens an alternative route, which also serves as a tool to redirect car traffic to the subway or other forms of public transportation.
Jakarta Transportation is currently facing a complicated traffic problem where a 'smart' system is clearly needed to provide more information to residents about the road situation. Through this project, it is hoped that metropolitan Jakarta can become a smart city that can provide a convenient transportation system for all citizens.
Also present at the event were Secretary of the Director General of Highways, Soebagiono, Director of Freeway, Urban and Regional Road Facilitation Hedy Rahadian, Secretary of the Toll Road Regulatory Agency Abram Elsajaya Barus, representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cabinet Secretariat, Bappenas, Jabodetabek Transportation Management Agency (BPTJJ) ) Ministry of Transportation and PT.
