Adsorption by Powders and Porous Solids: Principles, Methodology and Applications

The principal aim of the second edition of this book remains essentially the same as that of the first: to provide an introductory survey of the principles, methodology and applications of the adsorption of gases and liquids by powders and porous solids.
As before, special attention is given to the determination and interpretation of experimental data, particularly in relation to the characterization of adsorbents of technological importance.
Over the past 14 years, considerable progress has been made in the development of ordered pore structures and computer modelling of well-defined adsorption systems. However, a number of problems remain unresolved – notably in the assessment of the surface area and pore-size distribution of disordered adsorbents. The discerning reader will detect different shades of opinion in certain chapters and we hope that this will serve to stimulate further discussion and research.

U.S. Bridge Conditions and Long-Term Bridge Performance: A Primer

The United States has approximately 607,000 bridges on public roads subject to the National Bridge Inspection Standards mandated by Congress. The sudden catastrophic failure of the I-5 Interstate System bridge in Washington State has raised policy concerns in Congress regarding the condition of the nation's transportation infrastructure in general, and in particular the federal role in funding, building, maintaining, and ensuring the safety of roads and especially bridges in the United States. This book discusses highway bridge conditions. It then continues to provide information on a Long-Term Bridge Performance (LTBP) Program that is intended to provide a comprehensive definition of bridge performance that will be the foundation for carefully designed research studies in the LTBP Program.

Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement: Best Practices in Design, Construction and Rehabilitation

Continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) is enjoying a renaissance across the United States and around the world. CRCP has the potential to provide a long-term, "zero-maintenance" service life under heavy traffic loadings and challenging environmental conditions, provided proper design and quality construction practices are utilized. (An example of CRCP construction is shown in figure 1.)
This TechBrief provides an overview of the CRCP technology and the major developments that have led to what are referred to herein as the "best practices" for CRCP design and construction.

The George Washington Bridge: Poetry in Steel

I have lived most of my life on one side or the other of the George Washington Bridge. It is the busiest bridge in the world and, since its 1931 inauguration, has gotten steadily busier. Some 108 million vehicles crossed it in 2007, utilizing its two decks and fourteen lanes. Many people have deep affection for it and consider it the most beautiful bridge in the world. The George Washington, which celebrated its seventy-fifth anniversary in 2006, is in a class of its own.

Some Research Results on Bridge Health Monitoring, Maintenance and Safety

To develop an effective software for finite element (FE) model updating of bridges, the interface technology between VC++ and MATLAB was investigated firstly, and then a software for updating FE model of bridges, named 'Doctor for Bridges' (version 1.0) was developed. Finally, a model of concrete-filled steel tube arch bridge was applied to verify the performance and effectiveness of the proposed software.

Some Research Results on Bridge Health Monitoring, Maintenance and Safety III

This paper presents the results of a study on the early-age cracking behavior of diaphragm in long-span prestressed concrete box girder bridge with cracking control techniques. Based on the three-dimensional hydration heat temperature conduction and humidity diffusion theory, and according to the similarity of differential equation between the humidity diffusion theory and temperature conduction theory, the early-age cracking of diaphragm was simulated by a three-dimensional finite element model with consideration of concrete shrinkage, creep, cement hydration heat and variation of temperature. The numerical simulation accurately predicts the cracking region and size and stress time history of diaphragm, and provides load standard for cracking control techniques of prestressing force. The cracking control techniques of prestressing force effectively avoid the early-age cracking of diaphragm by application of practical engineering.

Sustainable construction materials that are capable of complying with quality standards and current innovation policies, aimed at saving natural resources and reducing global pollution, are one of the greatest present societal challenges. Construction activities require materials such as brick, concrete, steel, glass, clay, stone, mud, wood, etc. Amongst the above material, concrete is the primary construction material required for the building industries.
Due to the present focus on sustainable development, researchers and scientists around the world are investigating reusable, sustainable, and economic construction materials such as the recycled material from concrete aggregates. For the used concrete to be suitable and adapted for use as per the changing environment, the concrete must be of satisfactory quality leading to conservation of resources and a sustainable environment. Although with the usage of recycled aggregate, the prime advantage of the reduction in the usage of natural materials leading to substantial economic benefits with reduced construction costs is indisputable, there is also the concern regarding its structural performance and long-term durability. -

At the invitation of Smithers Rapra Technology Limited, this book was conceived as a brief introduction to the technology of natural rubber and synthetic rubber lattices. The intention is not to provide a completely comprehensive text but to give an abridged version of the technologies for the production of important latex products since there are many excellent books dealing with the details of such technologies. Latex-based technology forms a sizable fraction of natural and synthetic rubber technology and, thus, it is presumed that such an introduction to the important technologies would be beneficial to the technical personnel who use them.

Polymers in Asphalt

It will not have escaped the attention of the road user that most of the roads in the UK are surfaced with asphalt as opposed to its main competitor, concrete, which is a good endorsement of the material’s durability and user-friendly nature. In 2003 the market demand for asphalt in the UK was approximately 28 million tonnes used mainly in the road maintenance and new build market.
There are other uses for asphalt such as flooring and roofing. These volumes, however, are relatively small compared to the road market and these applications will not therefore be covered in any great detail in this review.
Bituminous materials have a long history of use dating back thousands of years. Asphalt, however, has only been around a relatively short time making its debut in the UK around the early 1900s. Edgar Purnell Hooley obtained the first British patent for Tarmacadam in 1902 (a.1) and the following year formed the TarMacadam Syndicate Ltd., in Denby, Derbyshire. It was, however, several years later before it became widely used, aligned with the growth in traffic volumes. Before the advent of bituminous-bound road building materials, roads were constructed of unbound aggregate mixtures that relied on good aggregate interlock for stability.
