It is the scope of the present chapter to outline briefly the basic concepts in the analysis of stresses and deformations and then proceed to establish the fundamental equitions used to examine the propagation of stress waves in certain types of solids. It is not the intention to give a detailed study of this field. For this purpose the reader is referred to the existing extensive literature.
