The Economic Implications of Bearing Capacity
The bearing capacity of a road or airfield has a direct and important impact on the total cost of moving people and goods. This total cost includes the construction, maintenance and user cost associated with the facility over its operating life. in the case of a hight volume freeway, the user cost component can comprise over 90% of the total lifetime cost. This cost is affected by the condition of the running surface, which, in turn, is a function of the bearing capacity. A small change in bearing capacity can therefore have a large effect on user cost.
