Condition Monitoring and Rehabilitation Design on Full Depth Asphalt Airport Pavement
In 1970-71, a full-depth asphalt runway was constructed in Copenhagen Airport. The runway was intended to serve for a maximum period of 15 years, since a total relocation of the airport was foreseen within that time span. The relocation was subsequently cancelled, and when resurfacing was considered in 1985, a falling weight deflectometer (FWD), roughness and visual condition survey was performed, indicating that bearing capacity was still satisfactory. Since then, several FWD bearing capacity and core drilling surveys have been executed. Analyses of the measurements have indicated progressive deterioration, resulting in a number of rehabilitation measures comprising of strengthening or recycling alternatives. It has been found that in order to assess the deformation characteristics of airport pavements properly, it is desirable to employ specialized airport FWD equipment. Supplementary to the rehabiliation considerations, the development runway's Pavement Classification Number (PCN) has also been analyzed, showing that the development is most predictable in the heavy-trafficked runway ends.
