Control of Contaminated Groundwater During Tunnel Excavation

With budget of $6.3Billio4=u74n the East Side Access Project (ESA) is the largest transportation project ever undertaken in New York City. The construction of the project will require significant tunnelling and underground work utilizing a variety of construction techniques. In Queens, the project will require the construction of four soft ground tunels, Using pressurized face TBM. The tunnels will be constructed under an active rairoad yard and the main line of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). In addition, cut and cover tunnels and underpinning of existing transit lines will be required. In Manhattan the project requires the construction of serveraltunels and two large station caverns in rock. The project faces unique geotechnical and environmental conditions within the soft-ground tunnel portion of the project located in Sunnyside Yard and Harold Interlocking-mixed face tunnel excavation, a variety of groundwater contamination plumes, as well as tunnelling through a New York State-listed Class II inactive hazardous waste site. This paper focuses on the techical challenges in the Queens segment and particularly the innovative construction and monitoring approaches identified to control movement of contaminated ground water. It addresses engineering aspects, public amenities, railroad operation, environmental issues, and technical challenges related to underground construction in a heavily developed railroad yard site while maintaining the existing facilities operational and with minimal imact on the public health and safety.
