Laboratory measurement of shear interface strength beneath a thin asphalt layer

This paper describes the laboratory experimental measurement of shear interface bond strength beneath a thin asphalt layer undertaken using a modified version of the Leutner sheerest and a laboratory version of the torque test.. The main modification to the Leutner test in extensio0n of the thickness of the thin asphalt layer to provide sufficient area to apply the load, Two different extension materials have been assessed and the modified test has then been used to measure the bond strength over a range of a temperatures and loading rates. Results show that the occurance of bulging in thin asphalt surfacing leads to a reduction in the measured bond strength below the layer. Extending the thickness of the surfacing layer by means of a metal plate or an additional asphalt mixture layer eliminates this bulging and restricts bond failure to the interface beneath the surfacing . this allows the Leutner test to accurately measure the bond strength beneath thin asphalt layers. There was found to be a reasonably good correlation between the average shear strength measured from the modified Leutner test and the average peak torque measured from the torque test.
