Some Physical Properties of Unsaturated Oil-Contaminated Sand

Environmental hazards are created by both on and offshore oil spills which contaminate soil. Oil contamination may also change the physical properties of soil. This paper summarizes the results relating to compaction, hydraulic conductivity, and shear strength of laboratory tests conducted with oil-contaminated sand. Only one type of sand was used for the tests primarily at two relative densities of compaction; however three different oils were used as contaminants to evaluate the effect of their kinematic viscosity on the geotechnical parameters studied. Oil contamination increased the compactibility of sand whereas it reduced the hydraulic conductivity and shear strength.
