Interpretation of Pressuremeter Tests in Unsaturated Soil

This paper examines cylindrical cavity expansion in unsaturated soil and its application to the interpretation of pressuremeter test results. An analytical solution for cylindrical cavity expansion in unsaturated soil is presented and used to examine the influence of unsaturated soil characteristics on the pressuremeter response. The pressuremeter response is characterized by the limit pressure and pressuremeter modulus. Effects of matric suction and initial degree of saturation are examined in light of unsaturated soil mechanics theories. Application of the unsaturated theory to the design of foundations is discussed in comparison to existing methods of pressuremeter interpretation. A methodology for predicting pressuremeter response under different moisture conditions is presented along with an example.
