Aggregate Properties and The Performance Of Superpave Designed Hot Mix Asphalt

Aggregate properties play a critical role in determining the performance of hot mix asphalt (HMA) designed using the Superpave system. This study evaluates how key aggregate characteristics—such as gradation, shape, angularity, texture, and cleanliness—affect the mechanical performance and durability of Superpave mixtures. Laboratory tests were conducted on various aggregate sources to assess their compliance with Superpave specifications, followed by the design and production of HMA samples.

Performance tests, including rutting resistance, moisture susceptibility, and stiffness evaluation, were carried out to analyze the behavior of the mixtures under simulated field conditions. The results indicate that aggregates with higher angularity and rough surface texture significantly improve resistance to permanent deformation, while proper gradation enhances load distribution and mixture stability. Conversely, poor aggregate quality, particularly in terms of cleanliness and shape, leads to reduced durability and increased susceptibility to moisture damage.

This study highlights the importance of selecting appropriate aggregate materials to optimize the performance of Superpave-designed asphalt mixtures. The findings provide valuable insights for pavement engineers in improving mix design practices and achieving longer-lasting road infrastructure.
