Research Report ARR 347: Asphalt Recycling: Results of a User Survey & The Design of Asphalt Mixes Incorporating Recycled Asphalt Pavements

The report covers two investigations. The 1st section deals with the results of an Australian wide survey on asphalt recycling. State and local governments and contractors from the asphalt industry were contacted and asked their experiences and perceptions of asphalt recycling in Australia. 88 replies were received which covered reclaimed asphalt pavements (RAP) hot in -place asphalt recycling, recycled asphalt used as a black aggregate and recycling using cold processes. The survey follows a similar survey undertaken in 1995 and one of the main concluysions was the need for dissemination of existing information The remainder of the report deals with what amendments, if any, need to be incorporated into the Austroads asphalt mix design procedures to accommodate asphalt mixes containing RAP. An experimental study undertaken by ARRB Transport Research indicated that only small alterations would be needed. These included the addition of procedures to heat RAP to mixing temperatures in a controlled manner and some guidance how the residual binder in the RAP is to be accounted for in the design procedure. The greater concern was the lack of a method for deriving a starting point for selecting a rejuvenator or binder content.
