Wire test results for three suspension bridge cables

The evaluation of the cables on a recently inspected suspension bridge provided an opportunity to rigorously test 80 wires removed from the cable. Full length stress-strain for the samples were developed. These curves were found to very from each other by as much as 13%, and calculations made to determine the effect on the estimated cable strength of this variation. It was found that the simple Brittle-wire model under estimates the cable strength by approxiamtely 3%. The tensile strengths of the wires on this bridge are compared with those of tp formely inspected bridges, and the cable strengths using these data in the Brittle-Wire Model are calculated. The variation in the stress-strain curves was found to be caused by variations in the carbon contents of the wires
