Development of LRFD Specifications for Horizontally Curved Steel Girder Bridges

Beal, David B, - Nama Orang;

The development of Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) specifications for horizontally curved steel girder bridges represents a significant advancement in bridge engineering practice. Unlike straight girder bridges, horizontally curved systems exhibit complex structural behavior due to the interaction of bending, torsion, and warping stresses. These effects necessitate more refined analytical and design approaches to ensure structural safety and serviceability.

This study reviews the theoretical background and practical considerations underlying the formulation of LRFD provisions for curved steel girders. Emphasis is placed on load distribution characteristics, stability criteria, and the calibration of resistance factors based on reliability analysis. Advanced analytical methods, including finite element modeling, are discussed to capture the three-dimensional response of curved bridge systems under various loading conditions.

The research also evaluates the differences between traditional allowable stress design (ASD) methods and LRFD approaches, highlighting the improved consistency and reliability achieved through probabilistic calibration. Case studies and comparative analyses are presented to demonstrate the applicability and accuracy of the proposed specifications.

The resulting LRFD provisions provide engineers with a rational and unified framework for the design of horizontally curved steel girder bridges, enhancing both safety and economic efficiency. These specifications contribute to the modernization of bridge design codes and support the increasing demand for complex bridge geometries in contemporary infrastructure projects.
