Deflection-temperature relationships for bituminous road surfacings in Kenya

Details of deflection-temperature relationships are given for bituminous surfacings up to 150 mm thick on Kenyan roads. On some sites plastic deformation of bituminous surfacings was identified during deflection tests at relatively low temperatures. However valid deflection measurements could be obtained on other sites at surfacing temperatures up to 60 degrees C. Hardening of the bitumen in the surfacing was monitored and found to have a significant effect upon deflection-temperature relationships. No general corrections for deflection-temperature relationships could be formulated because the relationships very even within 100m long sections of road. It is concluded that it is necessary to undertake deflection-temperature tests when carryning out deflection surveys on roads containing bituminous materials in tropical environments
