Car driving before and after passing the driving test

Trrl Lr 869

A national sample of drivers taking the car driving test during 1974/75 received a postal on how they learned to drive, and those 47 percent who passed completed a further postal survey a year later on their mileage and accidents. Nearly everyone (9d4 percent) had lessons from a driving school, and many had instruction from friends and relatives as well, the average cost of learning coming to 130 poundsterling. Younger drivers did best on the driving test and also had the highest accident rates during their first year. Overall, the accident rate for the whole group of newly qualified drivers was higher than for experienced motorists particularly at night and possibly also in bad weather
