Geometric imperfections in in-situ concrete highway bridges

Geometric imperfections are inevitable in the construction of any highway bridge. Dimentional variations of in-situ concrete members, the flatness of nominally vertical, plane in-situ concrete walls, the flatness of in-situ concrete bridge decks and the cover to reinforcement have been measured in a few recently completed highway bridges. Current specification requirements for tolerance for these imperfections have been examined and methods have been developed for measuring them. It has been found that tolerances for these imperfections are not clearly defined in contract documents and that the variability measured on the few brdiges which were surveyed was in some respects greater than that which is implied in the design assumptions. If tolerances are to be developed for use in the design and construction of highway bridges, more widespread surveys will be required.
