Axle loads on paved roads in Kenya

Trrl Lr 763

This report describes a study of the traffic loading on the paved primary roads of Kenya. The study formed part of a major field investigation designed to provide relationships for a computer model capable of estimating road construction costs, maintenance costs and vehicle operating costs. The work described in this report comprised part of the engineering investigations into the relationship between pavement damage and axle loading. Most of the work was carried out on the experimental sites of the main study. Additional surveys were conducted on sections of the proposed Trans-African Highway route not covered by the study, together with sites on the South Coast Road which carries heavy traffic between Zambia and Mombasa. On the major route in Kenya the average damaging factor of commercial vehicles was found to be more than ten times greater than that of similar vehicles on motorways in UK. The surveys were carried out during the period 1971-1974.
