A pilot scale machine for tunnel boring research

This report describes the development and design of a pilot-scale boring machine with a 1 m diameter head for rock cutting research. The machine has three main uses (1) the testing of a small number of full-size rock cutting tools, (2) the study of 1/4 to 1/8 scaled model of large arrays of cutting tools and (3) the development and proving of instrumentation. The cutting head is mounted on a hydraulic motor driven by a variable output pump powered by a 44 kW electric motor. These units and the control gear are assembled on a chassis running on rails. Instrumentation to record thrust, torque and rate of advance has been provided
