Factors of Safety in the Structural Design of Large Sewers



Despite their ancient history of usage urban sewars must refresent one of the last areas of civil engineering activity to begin, at least, to move from empirical to rational methods of structural design. Having commenced this move some seventy years ago, and taken nearly fifty yeras to appear to approach completion, sewar designers have, over the last quarter of a century, been faced with a bigger range of new materilas and construction methods than have their countrerparts in most other fields of structural design.
