As point sources of pollution are being eliminated, others, lessapparent, are becoming increasingly threatening to many water uses. Non-point sources of pollution, such as those generated by combined sewer overflows, have been found to be responsible for many water quality problems and it has been a number of years now that a study is being conducted at the Ecole Polytecnique of montreal to verify whether real time centralised control of combined sewer overflows can reduce the pollution of receiving waters.
