<note>This book is intended as a working manual for laboratory technicians and others engaged in the testing of soils for civil engineering purposes. This revision takes into account the changes and additions to BS 1377 brought about by the 1990 revision of that standard and some subsequent amendments. The new material added includes references to NAMAS (National Measurement Accreditation Service) requirements for calibration and tests introduced into the new British Standard such as those related to the moisture condition value. The requirements of the latest available ASTM standards have also been covered more extensively than in the first edition. Volume one presents details of the methods and equipment used in soil classification and compaction tests, the former including chemical tests. Chapters are provided on: a) equipment, techniques and safety; b) moisture content and index tests; c) density and particle density; d) particle size; e) chemical tests; f) compaction tests; and g) description of soils.
