<note>
In this paper, an efficient reliability-based approach for the analysis of segmental linings of underwater shield tunnels under high water pressure is developed. It is known that the lining analysis is subjected to the influence of uncertain factors such as soil property, structural material strength, which are modeled as random variables in reliability-based design. The modified elastic method is adopted to analyze the internal forces of segmental lining. The performance of the segmental lining against cracking is assessed. To facilitate the reliability analysis, a tool for reliability-based lining design is developed by implementing the first-order reliability method (FORM) into spreadsheet. It is shown that the performance of the tunnel lining is significantly affected by the uncertainty in soil property and height of water over tunnel crown. The developed reliability-based design tool can assess the failure probability and effectively guide the design of lining for underwater shield tunnel. The FORM is more computationally efficient, and can be a practical tool for tunnel lining design.
