<note>Tunnels and underground structures in highly seismic areas may suffer severe seismic damage under earthquakes. The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic response characteristics of long and large tunnel in rock. A three-dimensional finite element modeling was established using ABAQUS software and a case study of Galongla tunnel was made to examine the effects of wave intensity, frequency, duration, incidence direction as well as tunnel lining stiffness on the seismic response characteristics. The results showed that the seismic wave with higher intensity, lower frequency and longer duration would result in the greater displacement and cumulative damage of tunnel. And as the incidence direction increases within the range of 0–90°, the displacement has an overall upward trend accompanying with a temporary reduction at 45°. In addition, it revealed that the greater the tunnel lining stiffness is, the stronger the seismic response becomes. At last, an aseismic design for tunnel lining was proposed.
