1781-1801;p A large number of developments have taken place in the field of pavement evaluation since A.C. Benkelman introduced his deflection measurement beam. Nowadays complex equipment and computer programs are available to assist the pavement engineer in the prediction of the remaining life and the design of the needed maintenance strategy. In this paper an overview is made of some of the achievements that have been obtained in the field of pavement evaluation. Attention is paid to the measurement of deflections, the back calcuation of moduli, the needed material tests, the remaining life analysis, and the design of overlays. Some currently used procedures are commented and some suggestions for the use of research findings in pavement evaluation are made.
