<note>In the central Orange Free State, in the Republic of South Africa, sandy-clay materials predominate and road builders continuously face the problem of obtaining suitable materials. This region is important for its gold mining, and one of the predominant features is the massive heaps with waste rock from the mines. The mine dump rock could potentially be used for road building, but its use has been limited because of a lack of design parameters and performance records. The aim of this paper is to present design guidelines for pavements constructed with mine dump rock based on long term pavement performance and accelerated pavement testing. This paper first describes the current practice with the use of mine dump rock such as selection guidelines and construction techniques. Thereafter the performance of mine dump rock pavements, that have been in service for up to 10 years, were evaluated for their riding quality, visual, and structural performance. A control section and two mine dump rock pavements specially constructed were tested with a Heavy Vehicle Simulator.</note>
