<note>This study develops a set of criteria for cycling routes. This was accomplished by surveying the active bicycling community in rural East Texas. The survey was designed to determine demand, preferences and cyclist's experiences on existing routes. Demand was determined by days and miles per week cyclists currently ride and the type of bicycle(s) they own. Cyclist preferences were determined for route type, road structure, and specific parameters for surface type, shoulder width, traffic volume, posted speed limits, terrain and scenery attributes. Survey participants also reported their experiences with accidents.

After developing a list of criteria for bicycling routes, this data was entered into a geographic information system (GIS) to identify, rate and prioritize route attributes. This GIS analysis was used to propose potential bicycling routes in the study area.

This study details the preferences of cyclists and shows the demand for bicycling facilities in a rural area. It also demonstrates how GIS can be used to analyze bike route attributes such as road surface, shoulder width, posted speed limits, as well as amenities and services available on a bicycle route.
