Soil and Lining Responses During Tunnelling in Water-Bearing Permeable Soil – 3D Stress-Pore Pressure Coupled Anlysis

Construction ofa tunnel in urban area has become increasingly challengin due to the increase public concern regarding the impact of tunnelling on surrounding environments. In this regards, the control of groundwater has become an essential part of the planning, design, and contruction of a tunnellng project. This paper presents the results of an investigation on interaction mechanism between tunnelling and groundwater using a 3D stress-pore pressure coupled finite-element model. It is shown that the soil and lining responses are significantly influenced by the relative permeability of the lining, and that the circumferential pre-grouting is an effective means for minimizing the tunnelling and groundwater interaction.
