Three-Dimensional Numerical Simulation of Tunnelling Effects on an Existing Pile

In this paper, a three-dimensional elasto-plastic numerical simulation was conducted to investigate the effects of an advancing open face tunnel excavation on an exsiting loaded pile. The computed reults are compared with measurements from a cetrifuge model test. A significant zone of influece can be identified one tunnel diameter ahead and one behind the tunnel excavation face. Due to and additional settlement of the pile induced due to tunnelling, the soil resistance factor of safety (FOS) for the can be regarded as decreasing from 3.0 to 1.5. However, the tunnel excavation did not significantly effect the existing bending moment and axial load distributions within the pile.
