Centrifuge Study of Tunnel Movement and Their Interaction with Structures

The prediction of suface and subsuface ground dispacements and strains is an important element in the design of the new undergroud construction in urban areas. A number of plane strain cetrifuge test were undertaken at the City University, London, to model oftunel excavation in layered groud consisting of a moderately stif clay stratum overlain by a thick stratum of medium dense sand and the intera0ction of tunnelling generated ground movements on pre-existing structures. Tunnelling was permormed beneath a burried thin and high structure founded close to the tunnel crown. The purpose of the study was to assess ground movements and strains at different depths and the potential damage on the pre-existing structure.
