A LABORATORY STUDY ON THE EFFICACY OF GRANULATED BLAST FURNACE SLAG AS AN ADMIXTURE FOR IMPROVING THE STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS OF THE KAKINADA MARINE CLAY (C3003.pdf)

Since India is peninsular country, covered with water on three sides and there is large amount of area
coming under coastal region. The soils which exist in these coastal regions are Soft Marine Clays
formed by the deposits of generally weak and expansive in nature. These are problematic soils due to
their low strength, swelling and shrinkage characteristics and can be utilized only after stabilizing for
the construction pavements, foundations, canal lining and back fill material for earth retaining
structures etc. Many attempts were made in the past to improve their strength characteristics by
stabilizing with various industrial wastes. The present study is an attempt to utilize the granulated blast
furnace slag, which is a byproduct of steel plants, as an admixture to stabilize the marine clays. Tests
for compaction properties, C. B. R and swell tests has been conducted on the GBFS at an optimum percentage with the marine clay to study the performance of GBFS in the pavement sub grade and in
foundation soil beds.
