Testing and long term monitoring of a pre-cast pre-stressed concrete girder bridge

In an effort to obtain high quality data that is required to develop management procedures, deterioration
models, and life cycle cost models, researchers at Utah State University (USU) have conducted diagnostic
testing and installed long term instrumentation on multiple bridge structures. Due to the substantial
U.S. inventory of bridges, these objectives are essential for increasing efficiency and advancing the understanding
of bridge performance. As part of their research, USU performed diagnostic testing and installed instrumentation
on a bridge in Utah. This paper presents the structural health monitoring (SHM) that is installed
on the Cannery Street Overpass. Initial testing provided a baseline for comparison with the long term
measurements. Initial test data and long term data are compared and discussed. Long term instrumentation is
beneficial because the condition state of the bridge can be measured continuously over time rather than just in
isolated instances when field testing is performed.
