System Design and Implementation of Structural Health Monitoring and Maintenance Management System for Marine Viaduct Bridges



Structural health monitoring of cable-supported bridges in Hong Kong has been carried out
since 1997 by on-structure instrumentation systems and associated data processing and analysis tools. Recently,
such works have been extended to marine viaduct bridges with the combination of relevant application
systems for maintenance management. This paper introduces the works of the system design and implementation
of Structural Health Monitoring and Maintenance Management System (SHM&MMS) in seven aspects:
(1) conventional approach of inspection and maintenance, (2) modern approach of inspection and maintenance,
(3) degradation mechanisms in highway infrastructures, (4) identification of measurands for marine viaduct
bridges, (5) system architecture and operation of SHM&MMS, (6) framework of SHM&MMS, and (7)
implementation of SHM&MMS for marine viaduct bridges. Discussion of structural health monitoring systems
in Hong Kong, with typical examples of monitoring and evaluation results, is also presented. Finally,
conclusions are drawn regarding the future applications and developments of SHM&MMS.
