A laboratory investigation of the effect of multiple axle and truck configurations of HMA mixture rutting

With the adoption of axle load spectra in the new mechanistic-empirical pavement design method in lieu of the ESAL concept, the question of evaluating the pavement damage resulting from different axle and truck configurations becomes more relevant. In Particular, the state of Michigan is unique on permitting several heavy truck axle configurations that are composed of up to 11 axles, sometimes with as many as 8 axles within one axle group. There is also a need to assess pavement rutting damage resulting from these heavy trucks in current truck axle and size regulations. In this paper, the rutting life of an asphalt mixture under different truck axle using load pulses that are equivalent to the passage of an entire axle group or truck. The dissepared energy, strain and area approaches were utilized in analyzing the results and determining the number of repetitions to failure for each case, and unique permanent deformation curves that can be used for multiple axle configurations were developed. Trucks consisting of up to eleven axles and axle groups of up to eight axles were studied. The laboratory investigation indicates that the rutting damage due to different axle configurations ix approximately proportional to the number of axles, indicating that the damage per load carried is constant for individual axles. However, the same is not necessarily true for trucks with different axle configurations; this may be to due the effect of the rest period between axle groups.
