Mechanical behavior of ballast under monotonic and cyclic loading

The increasing construction and use of high speed railway lines makes it more and more crucial to understand and foresee the long term dynamic behavior of railway tracks. In particular, the settlement of infrastructures incurs track maintenance costs. This settlement of infrastructure is also closely linked to the constitutive material stressed by cyclic loadings. The present work aims to study the irreversible behavior of ballast materials under cyclic stresses at a large number of cycles. The results show that the axial deformation of the sample increases significantly with the frequency of application for a first sequence of cycles, with cyclic compression then becoming gradually independent of the frequency of loading.
