Coulumbian Cohesion Approach to Engineering of Expansive Soil Deposits: Field Performance

Quest for a solution to construct stable civil engineering structure including light structure on expansive soil deposits started for the author in the year 1953, when he was told that the buildings he was supervising will heave and crack. Thus, a programme of acquisition of knowledge and planning a long-term four-stage research commenced. The first and second stage research were directed towards understanding swelling pressure and heave phenomenon, through field simulated large scale and small scale experiments, which lead to identifying role played by Coulumbian cohesion bonds, structure of clay minerals and Newtonian weight, in causing, swelling pressure, heave and self equilibrating phenomenon/ no volume change zone. This helped in putting forward fundamental relations between alteration in cohesion and change in stress-deformation and strength behaviour of saturated expansive soil system. This also led to discovery of CNS technology and its possible application to engineering problems. In the third and fourth stage research prototype experiments were performed with CNS technology in MRBC to evolve material and construction specifications for field application. In 1986 a review of performance of CNS technology was conducted, which resulted in putting forwards simplified guidelines by CWC. The last performance review was conducted on 3rd and 4th of September 1999 to assess long-term performance. Out come of this endeavor covering entire spectrum from concept to construction to long-term performance is briefly described in this paper
