 <note>A protocol has been developed for calculation of potential future heave of basement floors in residential structures in the Colorado Front Range area. Data from swell/consolidation tests commonly used in the area and soil suction tests are used to predict potential heave. The calculations are very dependent upon the anticipated depth of wetting. Pre-construction soil suction data were compared to post-construction suction data. The results indicate the assumptions of depth of wetting developed for the protocol are appropriate in most instances. Unusually deep wetting may occur in areas where geologic conditions allow water to penetrate more easily into soils and sedimentary bedrock.</note>
