Determination of the Fatigue Behaviour of Asphalt Mixes Using the Results of Direct, Indirect and Triaxial Tensile test

Different laboratory test methods methods are established worldwide to predict the fatigue behavior of asphalt mixes. The paper presents results of a research project at Dresden University of Technology, Germany, aimed at investigating fatigue behavior of asphalt mixes using different dynamic testing methodologies: Direct Tensile Test (DDT), Indirect Tensite Test (ITT) and Triaxial Tensile Test (TTT). The influence of the air void content and the load frequency of the fatigue behavior was determined using ITT. The paper will describe in detail a methodology to use either results of the DTT and ITT or the TTT to determine 3D-fatigue surfaces for asphalt mixes. It will be demonstrated that the ITT in combination with the DTT as well as the ITT represent adequate test methods for the determination of input values for the analytical design of asphalt pavements with respect to the fatigue behavior.
