<note>Subsurface drainage plays a critical role in maintaining the structural integrity and long-term performance of pavement systems. This study investigates the effects of subsurface drainage conditions on the performance of asphalt and concrete pavements, focusing on factors such as moisture infiltration, load-bearing capacity, and pavement deterioration mechanisms. Poor drainage systems can lead to water accumulation within pavement layers, reducing material strength, accelerating fatigue cracking, rutting in asphalt pavements, and joint faulting or slab cracking in concrete pavements.

A comparative analysis was conducted using field observations, laboratory testing, and numerical modeling to evaluate pavement behavior under varying drainage conditions. Results indicate that efficient subsurface drainage significantly enhances pavement durability by minimizing moisture-related damage and improving load distribution. Asphalt pavements are particularly susceptible to moisture-induced damage such as stripping, while concrete pavements are more prone to erosion of base layers and pumping under saturated conditions.
