<note>This manual provides guidelines on ways to better manage the environmental aspects of rural sealed and unsealed roads, and to achieves cost-effective and environmentally sound outcomes. It provides general information about the many uses and values that rural roadsides have to a range of stakeholders. The manual's aim is to provide an appreciation of the scope of roadside management issues that can arise, and to highlight the significance of the roadside environment. Legislation and responsibilities relating to rural roadsides are outlined and the process of creating a roadside management plan is described, including assessment, planning and implementation. Water sensitive rural road design is described with guidelines covering road drainage design, waterway crossing design and rural road management in salt affected catchments. The manual cobers road construction works with a major focus on erosion and sediment control, and road maintenance operations with a major emphasis on drainage and vegetation management. Each chapter has information boxes which summarise best practice.
