pp. 201-214 Advances In Cable-supported Bridges The Forth Road Bridge was opened to traffic in 1964. Following work carried out as part of the development of the NCHRP guidelines, the Forth estuary Transport Authority (FETA), the owners and operaors of the crossing, took the decision in 2003 to carry out a first internal inspection of both main cables. The inspection revealed that there was significant corrosion within the main cables. This paper describes that inspection, results and the evaluation of the current and predicted future strength of the cable.
