 <note>When testing unsaturated soil specimens, air diffused through a high air entry (HAE) ceramic disk causes apparent but artificial pore water volume changes, creating difficulties in tracking water content. The authors present a unique alternative to flushing that accurately measures the diffused air volume in a pore water measuring device. The technique involves a small pressure pulse and Boyle's law to determine the volume of air in measuring device. A pulse measurement made immediately prior to any soil test obtains a unique correction factor, before any air has diffused into the measuring system, that is substracted from each subsequent pulse measurement to determine the volume of air at that time. The pressure/volume controllers used in this study allow the pulse measurements to be quickly administered many times throughout a test. This speed and frequently is necessary for accurate tracking of the diffused air volume. This pressure pulse technique for measuring diffused air volume is an innovative development that is simple to use for those researchers that have advanced soil testing systems</note>
