RURAL ROAD DESIGN: A Guide to The Geometric Design of Rural Roads

Rural Road Design is intended to assist with the design of the geometric form of rural roads. This Guide replaces the NAASRA Interim Guide to the Geometric Design of Rural Roads, 1980 (IRRD 255411) and follows the general philosophy of the 1980 Guide where what actually happens on the road network (85th percentile value of observed vehicle speeds) is adopted as the basis for geometric form, rather than the earlier approach of adopting a predetermined speed standard. This Guide requires more interpretation and engineering judgement than the mechanistic application of design speed standards. Accordingly, the continuing use of the word Guide in the title is significant. For this reason supporting explanations of the practice recommended are provided, either within the text, or in the list of references. Due to variations in legislation, accepted practice and vehicle type, which occur across Australia, readers are encouraged to refer to the appropriate Road Authority to obtain specific geometric design details. This was first published in 1989 by the National Association of State Road Authorities (NAASRA). (TRRL)
