<note>The book provides guidance on the planning, design, and operation of pedestrian facilities along streets and highways. Specifically, the guide focuses on identifying effective measures for accomodating pedestrians on public rights-of-way. Appropriate methods for accommodating pedestrians, which vary among roadway and facility types, are describes in this guide. This guide also recognizes the profound effect that landuse planning and site design have on pedestrian mobility and addresses these topics as well. The scope of this guide includes planning, design and operation of both existing and new pedestrian facilities. Although these guidelines can be applied to existing pedestrian facilities, it is usually most practical to implement these guidelines when a new facility is constructed or an existing facility is being constructed.
