Results from compaction trials show that modern vibratory rollers of mass 2 to 14 tonnes are, for a given number of passes, capable of achieving up to about 3 percent more compaction than present deadweight machines. The characteristics of deadweight and vibratory rollers that influence compaction are considered, so too are the practical aspects of using the vibratory machines.
