The controversy surrounding intermediate public transport is discussed and the more important issues and problems are identified. Brief descriptions of some examples are also presented which illustrate how these transportation systems are organised and operated. The purpose of the report is to elucidate the significant role that intermediate public transport performs in the urban sector of developing countries. This provides the background to further research work being conducted by the Overseas Unit of TRRL into the efficiency of these various forms of transport.
