While developing an algorithm of control for combined sewer overflows, the authors had to simulate the movement of water in large combined interceptors following precipitation. Because of the algorithm of control, it was necessary to find a function that could simulate the movement of an hydrograph with the following constraints: this function had to be explicit to avoid time-consuming iterations, the movement of any element of the hydrograph had to be fully independent of the adjacent elements and the routed hydrograph had to conform as well as possible with reality.
